Taking your dog hiking in Girona is one of the activities our guests at Mas Torrencito repeat most. For 20 years we have been welcoming families with dogs of all breeds — yes, including restricted breeds with no issues whatsoever — and the question is always the same: where do we take them tomorrow? Here are the five hikes we recommend most, from a flat lakeside stroll to the clifftop trails of Cap de Creus. Suitable for all fitness levels, suitable for all dogs.
1. Lake Banyoles — the easiest and most beautiful walk
The circuit around the lake is flat, well-marked and shaded enough for your dog to stay comfortable even in summer. Around 7 km with virtually no elevation gain, with several spots where dogs can wade in the water. If you have an older dog, one with reduced mobility, or you simply want a relaxed morning out, this is the one. It is no coincidence that it is the most repeated recommendation among our guests.
Difficulty: Easy | Distance: ~7 km | Elevation: minimal | Best season: year-round
2. Fageda d’en Jordà — for those looking for something different
The beech forest of La Garrotxa is one of those places that is hard to describe until you have seen it yourself. The trails are gentle, the ground is soft and in autumn the smell of damp earth and fallen leaves has dogs with their noses glued to the ground the entire way. You can combine it with a visit to the Santa Margarida volcano if your dog is up for a bit more climbing. If you are planning a multi-day trip with your dog through Girona, the Garrotxa is worth a full day.
Difficulty: Easy | Distance: ~3–5 km depending on route | Elevation: very low | Best season: autumn and winter
3. Cap de Creus — for dogs that want sea and rock
Cap de Creus is the easternmost point of the Iberian Peninsula, and it shows. The landscape is rugged, wild and spectacular. The paths are not technically demanding but do require attention — loose rocks and sun-exposed stretches mean you should bring plenty of water and go out of high season. In summer the heat is too intense. In spring or autumn, it is stunning. After the hike, there are dog-friendly beaches near Girona close to the Cap that are well worth the short detour.
Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: variable (4–12 km depending on route) | Elevation: moderate | Best season: spring and autumn
4. Sant Pere de Rodes — a climb with views and a real payoff
The ascent to Sant Pere de Rodes monastery takes some effort, but the panoramic views over the Empordà plain and the Costa Brava from the top make every step worth it. It is one of those hikes where the dog arrives at the summit just as happy as you do. Ideal for anyone who wants to combine nature with a little history without the effort feeling like a slog.
Difficulty: Moderate | Distance: ~5–7 km return | Elevation: ~300 m | Best season: spring and autumn
5. Camí de Ronda — the whole Costa Brava on foot
The Camí de Ronda follows almost the entire Costa Brava coastline. You do not need to walk it end to end: pick a section, start in one village and finish in the next. In high season there are too many people; in low season it is a completely different experience. The sound of the sea, your dog trotting ahead of you, no rush. One of the hikes we recommend most to guests staying several nights. If you are travelling with a large dog or a restricted breed, this trail will give you no trouble at all.
Difficulty: Variable (easy–moderate) | Distance: choose your section | Elevation: low–moderate | Best season: low season
What Girona gives your dog — and you
These five hikes are the ones that always come up at the breakfast table when someone asks where to go. They are not the only ones — Girona has enough trails to fill weeks — but they are the ones that genuinely work with real dogs, in all conditions. If you are unsure which one suits your dog best — size, age, breed, it does not matter — just ask us. We have been opening the door to everyone for 20 years.
And if you have not yet chosen where to stay, here is why staying at Mas Torrencito near the Costa Brava makes sense: no breed restrictions, no dog limits per room, and 7 fenced hectares where your whole team can roam free.
Frequently asked questions about hiking with dogs in Girona
Yes. There is no regulation in Girona that prohibits restricted breeds from accessing natural spaces, provided they are kept on a lead and their documentation is in order. At Mas Torrencito we have welcomed dogs of all breeds for 20 years, with no exceptions.
The circuit around Lake Banyoles is the most accessible option: around 7 km of flat, shaded walking with water points for your dog. Perfect for older dogs, dogs with limited mobility, or anyone who prefers a gentle pace.
Spring and autumn are the ideal seasons: mild temperatures, fewer people on the trails and spectacular scenery. Summer is possible on shaded routes like the Fageda d’en Jordà, but you should set off early and carry plenty of water for your dog.
Yes, the Camí de Ronda is accessible to dogs on most of its sections. We recommend doing it in low season to avoid crowds and bringing enough water, especially on the more exposed coastal stretches.
Mas Torrencito is located in Parets d’Empordà, Girona, less than one hour from every hike on this list. We accept dogs of all breeds with no limit per room, with free access to 7 fenced hectares. The supplement is €6 per dog per night.
