Manuela, the Chief of Mas Torrencito: A Legacy of Respect and Doggie Wisdom
At Mas Torrencito, the rural house where dogs have the lead and people are welcome, the undisputed leader was Manuela, a Golden with the elegance of a queen and the patience of a teacher. For more than 16 years, she saw thousands of dogs pass through her home and yet there were never any problems with her. Her authority did not come from imposition, but from the respect she had earned.
Scene: A morning at Mas Torrencito
In the large garden of Mas Torrencito, a group of dogs are rolling in the grass, playing carefree. Manuela watches from her favorite corner, calm, with that look that says it all. A young, giddy dog, Toby, approaches too confidently.
Toby: (hovering around Manuela) Hi, hi! You have an interesting smell! Can I play with you?
Manuela: (with a serene look) Play yes. To disrespect, no.
Toby: (with a nervous chuckle) Respect? How do you play that game?
Manuela: (she gets up with dignity) You play with your head, not with your teeth or with unnecessary pushing and shoving. You play knowing when someone wants to play… and when not.
Toby wags his tail enthusiastically and suddenly tries to mount Manuela. A couple of nearby dogs stop their play and watch expectantly.
Manuela: (growls softly) I’ll tell you once, puppy. I don’t like that.
Toby: (backs up a little, confused) Oh, no? But with others it works…
Manuela: (staring at him) I am not others.
Toby hesitates for a moment, but like any giddy young man, he tries again. This time, Manuela stands up, her posture firmer.
Manuela: (in a deep voice) I’m telling you, Toby. No.
Rex, an older dog who has lived at Mas Torrencito for a long time, approaches with a low chuckle.
Rex: (whispering to Toby) Dude, he’s giving you a chance to learn. I’d take it if I were you…
Toby: (lowering his ears) Okay, okay… I won’t do it again.
Manuela: (returning to her relaxed position) Good boy. Now run with the others and enjoy the day.
Toby bolts off with the rest of the dogs, wiser than he was a few minutes earlier.
Scene: On the terrace, the humans observe
Miguel, the owner of Mas Torrencito, is having coffee with a couple of visitors. One of them, Jaime, has been watching the scene with interest.
Jaime: (surprised) Incredible… how they communicate without barking or fighting.
Miguel: (smiles) Because dogs know how to set limits. First they warn, then they warn again… and if you ignore them, they act.
Sofia, Jaime’s wife, nods in agreement.
Sofía: (thoughtful) It’s funny… it’s the same in life. Some people don’t listen until it’s too late and then they are surprised by the reaction of others.
Miguel: (shrugs) Exactly. Then they call the dogs aggressive… when in reality, they just did what anyone would do if they felt invaded.
Jaime: (laughing) It’s like in bars. The one who bothers too much, in the end, gets paid.
Miguel: (laughing too) Exactly! But the good thing about dogs is that they have more education than many humans.
Sofía: (looking at Manuela) That Golden is a wise woman. I wish more people would learn from her.
Miguel: (raising his cup of coffee in a toast) To Manuela, the Boss of Mas Torrencito. Here’s to many more years of doggy wisdom!
Wise advice: Respect is the key to all coexistence. Learn to observe, to listen and to understand before acting. Dogs teach us every day that balance is in harmony and well-established limits. If you want your dog to be happy, start by being a conscious owner. And remember, in life as in the pack, true authority is not imposed, it is earned with respect.
