It may sound exaggerated.
It may sound unrealistic.
But if a few things align…
2026 could be the year the online tourism game begins to change.
I’m not saying giants like Booking.com or Expedia will disappear tomorrow.
That would be naïve.
But for the first time in many years, a real alternative may be emerging.
And that alternative has a name.
Artificial Intelligence.

Try it yourself right now
You don’t have to wait for the future.
You can test this right now.
If you use Safari or Google, you only need to do this:
1️⃣ Open the search engine
2️⃣ Type what you are looking for
3️⃣ Select the AI or AI answer option
Then write something like this:
“Find me a rural guesthouse that rents rooms individually, offers breakfast, allows three dogs, is less than 20 minutes from the beach and where my dog can swim with me in the pool.”
The artificial intelligence will analyze thousands of results.
And it will show accommodations that actually match what you are looking for.
Then something interesting happens.
The traveler simply says:
“Show me availability for this one.”
And this is where everything could change.
Because that reservation does not necessarily need to go through a platform anymore.
It can be done directly with the accommodation.
The key is the booking engine
But for this to happen there is one fundamental condition.
The accommodation must have:
- an online booking engine
- real-time availability
- updated prices
- a clear website
- well-structured information
If we don’t have this…
artificial intelligence cannot work with our data.
And the customer will return to the traditional platforms.
I have been in rural tourism for almost 20 years
I have been working in rural tourism for almost 20 years.
And from day one I had something very clear.
We needed online reservations.
I remember when many accommodations were still working with:
- paper agendas
- notebooks
- phone calls
- handwritten notes
And what is surprising is that…
it still happens today.
Many rural accommodations still do not have:
- a booking engine
- online availability
- an optimized website
Sometimes because of comfort.
Sometimes because technology feels overwhelming.
And sometimes because nobody explained that this moment would eventually arrive.
A small call to rural tourism owners
This article is not a criticism.
It is a small call to the rural tourism community.
Because rural tourism has something no platform can replicate:
- authenticity
- human connection
- real stories
- unique places
But to compete in the new digital world we also need something else.
Connectivity.
Updated websites.
Booking engines.
Clear information.
Because the day someone asks AI:
“Find me an authentic rural guesthouse where I can travel with my dogs.”
The accommodations that are ready will appear first.
This is not the end of Booking
No.
I don’t believe Booking.com will disappear tomorrow.
And I don’t think platforms like Expedia will vanish overnight either.
But I do believe one thing.
The balance may begin to shift.
And for the first time in many years, small rural accommodations may regain something very important:
direct relationships with their guests.
The question is not if it will happen
The question is not if it will happen.
Because it probably will.
The real question is different.
Will we be ready when it happens?
Because the future of rural tourism does not depend only on the platforms.
It also depends on us.
On whether we choose to adapt.
Whether we choose to learn.
And whether we decide to take the step forward.
💬 If you run a small rural accommodation and you have read this far, I would love to know your opinion.
Do you believe artificial intelligence will change how people book travel?
