We&#8217;ve got quite a few forests. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n<p>So we&#8217;ve put together something a bit more useful.<\/p>\n\n<p>This isn&#8217;t just a list of <strong>Girona&#8217;s prettiest forests<\/strong>. There are already hundreds of articles like that online.<\/p>\n\n<p>This list is built <strong>for people traveling with a dog<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>We want to know if there&#8217;s real shade, how much walking is involved, whether it&#8217;s an outing for a twelve-year-old Golden or for a Border Collie who, after 15 kilometres, still looks at you asking:<\/p>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/bosque_detras_mastorrencito.png\" alt=\"Dog looking at the camera in a forest near Mas Torrencito\">\n\n<p><strong>\u00abSo what now?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>And we also want to know something essential in summer: whether it&#8217;s worth going when Girona decides to hit 35 degrees.<\/p>\n\n<p>If instead you&#8217;re after lesser-known spots, we already have another guide with <a href=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/rutas-perro-girona-blanes-cadaques\/\">10 dog-friendly routes around Girona that go a bit off the usual circuit<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>This one is different.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>These are the classics that are genuinely worth knowing\u2026 seen through a dog&#8217;s eyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83d\udd25 Before you head out: check the Pla Alfa<\/h2>\n\n<p>Especially between June and September, there&#8217;s one thing you should do even before putting the dog in the car:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>check the Generalitat&#8217;s Pla Alfa (fire-risk plan).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>Fire risk can change from one day to the next, and when the maximum level is activated, access to certain forest areas may be restricted.<\/p>\n\n<p>And it&#8217;s not just theory.<\/p>\n\n<p>This very summer, Les Gavarres suffered a major fire, and during July temporary access restrictions were applied to the massif.<\/p>\n\n<p>So our recommendation is very simple:<\/p>\n\n<p>\ud83d\udd25 strong heat + forest + summer = <strong>two minutes checking the Pla Alfa before you leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/interior.gencat.cat\/ca\/serveis\/informacio-geografica\/visors-i-aplicacions\/pla-alfa\/\">\ud83d\udc49 Check the updated Pla Alfa<\/a><\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83c\udf33 1. La Fageda d&#8217;en Jord\u00e0 \u2014 Santa Pau<\/h2>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/slide-home-003-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"La Fageda d'en Jord\u00e0 beech forest near Santa Pau, Girona\">\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the obvious one.<\/p>\n\n<p>Yes, we know it shows up on absolutely every list.<\/p>\n\n<p>But there are touristy places that are overrated, and touristy places that are famous <strong>because they&#8217;re genuinely extraordinary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>La Fageda belongs to the second group.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s an entirely unusual beech forest, growing at around 550 metres of altitude on an old lava flow from the Croscat volcano. The volcanic terrain creates those little mounds known as <em>tossols<\/em>, while the beech trees turn the walk into a kind of green cathedral.<\/p>\n\n<p>And with a dog it has one huge advantage:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>shade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s a very simple official route of about 2.6 km and roughly an hour, though longer routes can be linked from the area.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd From Mas Torrencito:<\/strong> around an hour by car<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udeb6 Walk:<\/strong> from 2.6 km, with options to extend it<br>\n<strong>\u26f0\ufe0f Difficulty:<\/strong> very easy on the short route<br>\n<strong>\ud83c\udf33 Shade:<\/strong> excellent<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udca7 Water:<\/strong> better to bring your own for the dog<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc15 Dog:<\/strong> in a protected natural area, always best kept under control and on a lead<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66 Crowds:<\/strong> high, especially on weekends and in autumn<br>\n<strong>\u2600\ufe0f Best time:<\/strong> autumn and spring; in summer, early morning<br>\n<strong>\u2b50 Mas Torrencito dog rating:<\/strong> 9\/10<\/p>\n\n<h3>\ud83d\udc15\u200d\ud83e\uddba Which dog is it for?<\/h3>\n\n<p>For the calm one, the older one, the dog who enjoys walking and sniffing without needing to cover twenty kilometres or bolt after every squirrel.<\/p>\n\n<p>And for their humans too.<\/p>\n\n<p>Because in autumn there are moments when you end up looking up more than at the dog.<\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83e\uddda 2. Les Estunes \u2014 Porqueres, Banyoles<\/h2>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/1063px-la-puda-entrada-1024x694.jpeg\" alt=\"Les Estunes forest near Banyoles, with travertine rock formations\">\n\n<p>This one is probably <strong>the great hidden gem of the list<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Les Estunes is a small, damp, shady forest very close to Lake Banyoles.<\/p>\n\n<p>But the truly curious part here isn&#8217;t just the trees.<\/p>\n\n<p>The ground is made up of large blocks of travertine that, over time, have cracked, creating <strong>crevices, small caves, corridors, and natural passageways<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>There are places where you go for a hike.<\/p>\n\n<p>And there are places where it looks like someone set the stage before you arrived.<\/p>\n\n<p>This is one of the latter.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also linked to one of the loveliest legends of the Pla de l&#8217;Estany: the <strong>Goges de Les Estunes<\/strong>, water women or fairies who, according to tradition, lived among the crevices and came out at night.<\/p>\n\n<p>We can&#8217;t guarantee you&#8217;ll see any.<\/p>\n\n<p>Although with certain Mas Torrencito guests we&#8217;ve seen far stranger things. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd From Mas Torrencito:<\/strong> about 35\u201340 minutes<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udeb6 Walk:<\/strong> short; perfect to combine with Banyoles<br>\n<strong>\u26f0\ufe0f Difficulty:<\/strong> easy, though careful around the crevices<br>\n<strong>\ud83c\udf33 Shade:<\/strong> excellent<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udca7 Water:<\/strong> we&#8217;re right by the lake area, but bring drinking water for the dog<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc15 Dog:<\/strong> keep especially controlled around crevices and narrow spots<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66 Crowds:<\/strong> low-medium<br>\n<strong>\u2600\ufe0f Best time:<\/strong> pretty much all year<br>\n<strong>\u2b50 Mas Torrencito dog rating:<\/strong> 8.5\/10<\/p>\n\n<h3>\ud83d\udc36 Which dog is it for?<\/h3>\n\n<p>For the curious one.<\/p>\n\n<p>That dog who takes ten minutes to cover twenty metres because <strong>it absolutely needs to know who passed by yesterday, the day before, and possibly back in 2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Also, thanks to its shade, this is one of our favourites for a short summer outing.<\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83c\udf32 3. Les Gavarres \u2014 Els \u00c0ngels \/ Sant Mart\u00ed Vell<\/h2>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Llagostera-PuigCadiretes-WEB-23-1-683x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Les Gavarres forest, Els \u00c0ngels area near Sant Mart\u00ed Vell, Girona\">\n\n<p>If La Fageda is the fairy-tale forest, Les Gavarres is <strong>Girona in its purest form<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Holm oaks, cork oaks, pines, forest tracks, and that mix of dry earth, wood, and Mediterranean vegetation smell that changes completely depending on the season.<\/p>\n\n<p>We particularly like the <strong>Els \u00c0ngels and Sant Mart\u00ed Vell<\/strong> area because you can basically build the walk however you like.<\/p>\n\n<p>Half an hour?<\/p>\n\n<p>Sure.<\/p>\n\n<p>Two hours?<\/p>\n\n<p>Also fine.<\/p>\n\n<p>Do you have one of those dogs who apparently comes with a built-in nuclear battery?<\/p>\n\n<p>He&#8217;ll definitely find a way to stretch it out even further. \ud83d\ude02<\/p>\n\n<p>There&#8217;s, for example, a route through Els \u00c0ngels of just over 10 km with about 400 metres of elevation gain.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd From Mas Torrencito:<\/strong> roughly 40\u201350 minutes depending on access<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udeb6 Walk:<\/strong> fully customisable; some routes exceed 10 km<br>\n<strong>\u26f0\ufe0f Difficulty:<\/strong> easy to moderate depending on the route<br>\n<strong>\ud83c\udf33 Shade:<\/strong> good within the forest<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udca7 Water:<\/strong> always bring enough<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc15 Dog:<\/strong> keep under control; watch for cyclists, wildlife, and track crossings<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66 Crowds:<\/strong> medium<br>\n<strong>\u2600\ufe0f Best time:<\/strong> autumn, winter and spring; in summer, early<br>\n<strong>\u2b50 Mas Torrencito dog rating:<\/strong> 8\/10<\/p>\n\n<h3>\ud83d\udc15 Which dog is it for?<\/h3>\n\n<p>For almost anyone, because you can adjust the distance a lot.<\/p>\n\n<p>That said, in summer this is an area where we always recommend <strong>checking the Pla Alfa before heading out<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>And if you already know this part of the massif, in our post on <a href=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/rutas-perro-girona-blanes-cadaques\/\">10 dog routes around Girona<\/a> we also cover the Cam\u00ed dels Dolmens de Romany\u00e0 de la Selva.<\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\u26f0\ufe0f 4. So where to now?\u00bb<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>For that one.<\/p>\n\n<p>For an older dog, one with joint problems, or one not used to walking, we have much better options on this list.<\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83e\udea8 5. Vall de Sant Daniel \u2192 Castell de Sant Miquel \u2014 Girona<\/h2>\n\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mastorrencito.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/vall-sant-daniel-camins-girona-costa-brava-1.jpg\" alt=\"Vall de Sant Daniel, Girona, path towards Castell de Sant Miquel\">\n\n<p>This one has a fantastic quirk:<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>you can start almost right from Girona city itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p>La Vall de Sant Daniel is one of those small wonderful anomalies we have here.<\/p>\n\n<p>You&#8217;re a stone&#8217;s throw from the Barri Vell, and suddenly you&#8217;re walking among vegetation, paths, and fountains as if you&#8217;d travelled many kilometres away.<\/p>\n\n<p>If you want to add a bit more spice to the walk, you can continue up to the <strong>Castell de Sant Miquel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The route proposed by Turisme Giron\u00e8s is about <strong>9.35 km with 318 metres of elevation gain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p><strong>\ud83d\udccd From Mas Torrencito:<\/strong> about 30\u201335 minutes to Girona<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udeb6 Walk:<\/strong> up to 9.35 km if you climb to Sant Miquel<br>\n<strong>\u26f0\ufe0f Elevation gain:<\/strong> 318 m<br>\n<strong>\ud83c\udf33 Shade:<\/strong> good along much of the Vall de Sant Daniel<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udca7 Water:<\/strong> there are fountains in the valley, but don&#8217;t rely on them for the dog<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc15 Dog:<\/strong> great for a dog with medium activity levels<br>\n<strong>\ud83d\udc68\u200d\ud83d\udc69\u200d\ud83d\udc67\u200d\ud83d\udc66 Crowds:<\/strong> higher near Girona, lower as you climb<br>\n<strong>\u2600\ufe0f Best time:<\/strong> pretty much all year<br>\n<strong>\u2b50 Mas Torrencito dog rating:<\/strong> 8.5\/10<\/p>\n\n<h3>\ud83d\udc15\u200d\ud83e\uddba Which dog is it for?<\/h3>\n\n<p>For the city dweller with a mountain soul.<\/p>\n\n<p>The one who calmly strolls through Girona in the morning, and half an hour later is burying its head in the bushes as if it had never seen a pavement.<\/p>\n\n<p>It&#8217;s also our favourite option if you&#8217;re visiting Girona and want to combine <strong>city + dog + nature<\/strong> in the same day.<\/p>\n\n<hr>\n\n<h2>\ud83c\udf3f 7.
